A friend texted me saying that a co-worker or somebody is looking at cars in the € 2K range ($ 2.5 K) and that he is looking at V40s, asking for my opinion. I say "Yeah, why not, but also take a look at the Japanese cars you'll find along the way." Did I do right?
Remember that Hondas and Toyotas don't command the price premiums they do in the US in the Germany. Quite the opposite! With less fancy badges, they are cheaper than old BMWs, VWs or whatever.
I vaguely remember researching this car as a possible option for myself a few years ago, and I can't recall anything too drastic. (Stay away from certain auto options?) In the end they are a Mitsubishi Charisma with a fancier body.
Should I add something to that statement? If you know what to look out for with these, or what to avoid, it's not too late! We can help somebody with somewhat limited means get a decent car.

I have had nothing but bad experience with the tri-diamond or anything that had one of their engine designs in it.Mitsubishi...not even once.

They are fine cars but man they can be tough to work on. My wife's family is a die hard Mitsu family and I became the family's on call mechanic and I swear they intentionally put stuff in impossible locations.

My Intrepid had a Mitsu designed engine. NOTHING was in any location that i have ever seen in any other engine, EVER and I'm including my weirdo Fiat 500 engine in that.

Right? My brother in law's Galant I-4 had the thermostat on this weird water neck housing that was below the head next to the transmission and my wife's Diamante has a EGR valve on the opposite side of the intake plenum as the EGR tube off the exhaust.

I remember the thermo on mine had to be replaced once.. To get to it, you had to remove the entire head of the engine. WHY WOULD THEY DO THAT!!!???

If your friend gets a V40, make sure he avoids the 4 speed box.

My daily driver is a V40. It's a great reliable and cheap car. And it's easy to work on. Get a manual with a few options. My car has done more than 193.000KM and it still runs good. You can make them look good fairly easy.
